Hammer toe

A hammer toe is a condition in which the toe buckles, causing the middle joint of the affected toe to poke out. This condition is often aggravated by tight fitting shoes that put pressure on the hammer toe. Often a corn develops at the site.

Ill-fitting shoes are the primary cause of hammer toes. Besides footwear, the other potential causes of hammer toes are:

  • Injury where the toe is jammed or broken
  • Diseases that affect the soft tissues of the foot, such as arthritis
  • Abnormal foot mechanics
  • Genetics
