Breast Cancer Center
With more than 30 years of National Cancer Institute-sponsored clinical research experience and a close collaboration with the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, the Breast Cancer Center at North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute is one of the most active and comprehensive in the New York metropolitan area.
Breast Cancer Center patients experience the breadth and depth of complete breast cancer care. With an emphasis on the patient, the center offers screening, diagnostic imaging, breast cancer diagnosis, breast cancer treatment, breast reconstruction and follow-up. Breast cancer education, assessment of cancer risks and prevention is also a central part of the center’s goals.

Expert diagnostics are one of the keys to successful breast cancer treatment. The center offers state-of-the-art tomosynthesis (3D mammography). Staying on the cutting edge of diagnosis allows for earlier and more accurate treatment.
Once an on-target diagnosis characterizes a patient’s particular breast tumors, the physicians personalize a treatment plan. The patient is immediately surrounded by a team of experts. The multidisciplinary specialists in medical oncology, surgical oncology, and radiation oncology collaborate to ensure the fine-tuned coordination of an entire treatment plan.
Patient comfort during breast cancer treatment is paramount. Thanks to the most advanced, least invasive treatments, the center ensures that patients experience fewer side effects whenever possible. The distinguished surgeons have unique expertise in many advanced surgical techniques. When applicable, breast reconstruction is achieved through state-of-the-art plastic surgery techniques that attempt to restore a breast to normal shape, appearance and size.
The superb breast cancer care provided by this multidisciplinary program is directly linked to active participation in clinical research. Physicians at the Breast Cancer Center have more experience in breast cancer prevention trials than any healthcare provider in the New York metropolitan area.
The Breast Cancer Center is a leading center for the development of innovative systemic therapies for breast cancer. Physician-researchers take questions that arise in their clinical practice, answer them through clinical trials and take this new knowledge back to the center where it can benefit the patient directly. The center supports investigator-initiated pharmacological research and epidemiology, and is active in cooperative group clinical trial programs with organizations like National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP), the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology and the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG).
The Breast and Ovarian Cancer Specimen Bank serves as a vital resource to discover and validate new biomarkers (characteristics) for early detection, prediction of disease course and outcome, treatment response and risk of relapse in breast and/or ovarian cancer.
Unfortunately, current methods of early detection are not effective until a tumor cell mass has formed, which may be years after the initial onset of the disease. Through the Breast and Ovarian Cancer Specimen Bank, researchers are collecting blood and tissue samples from women who have or are suspected to have either type of cancer. Efforts to simultaneously study both breast and ovarian cancer are unique and place us at the forefront of cancer research. To date, several hundred people have contributed to the specimen bank. Preliminary results of this study have been presented at several national and international meetings.
