Our services

Our Emergency Department provides many advanced programs to ensure that our patients get state-of-the-art care for virtually any illness or injury:

  • New York certified state stroke center
  • New York state percutaneous coronary intervention center
  • Pediatric Emergency Department – Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, our 34-bed facility is staffed by board-certified pediatric emergency physicians.
  • Split flow process
    • The North Shore LIJ Health System partnered with industrial engineers to enhance better care process. The model is called split flow which was developed within the Banner Health system.
    • In addition to giving patients a bed only when they really need it, we pursued parallel processing triage and registration in one quick step, splitting and managing patients based on severity of illness. After entering the emergency department, all patients receive a quick registration, quick review and an emergency severity index level. Critical patients are immediately taken to a main ED bed and their care progresses in a typical fashion. But for less critical patients, the path has been modified. The key differences are that the primary nurse and physician assessment and test orders are all parallel processes that eliminate duplicative steps. Second, the time patients occupy a treatment room or bed is reduced by leveraging an internal results waiting/continuing care area. Third, patients move to the resources they need only when they need them. This process ensures that patients are waiting only for true rate-limiting steps, like the time it takes to analyze tests or to conduct a procedure.
  • Behavioral health unit – Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, our 13-bed behavioral health unit allows privacy and specialty psychiatric care for patients who need emergency mental health services. Our facility is staffed by emergency psychiatry physicians, social workers, and patient engagement specialists. As part of the medical center which houses the Zucker Hillside psychiatric hospital, our department has access to one of the most progressive behavioral health teams in the region.
  • Academic tertiary care center – This designation means that you can expect the highest quality emergency care available from experts who are renowned in their fields. Our senior physicians participate in scholarly research activities, teach at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine and provide supervision for doctors in training (residents). We support many teaching programs including EM residency, EM/IM residency, International EM, EMS, Critical Care, Ultrasound, Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Toxicology.
