The Lenox Hill Hospital Cytopathology Service plays a prominent role in the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant conditions. Cytology specimens are prepared and evaluated on-site at Lenox Hill by an experienced staff of cytotechnologists and board-certified cytopathologists.
We work closely with primary care physicians, radiologists, surgeons, and oncologists helps to assure timely and accurate results. The cytopathology service also offers consultation for second opinions on diagnostically challenging cytologic material. We also provides rapid on-site evaluation for bronchoscopy and gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures.
Together with the Lenox Hill Radiology Department the Cytopathology Service performs and assesses fine needle aspiration biopsy procedures for both superficial and deep-seated lesions. Commonly aspirated body sites include:
- Lymph nodes
- Salivary gland
- Soft tissue
These minimally invasive procedures are less traumatic for the patient and may obviate the need for more costly surgery. Most are done in an ambulatory setting using ultrasound, CT and fluoroscopic imaging. Samples are collected and immediately evaluated on site for specimen adequacy.
Out-patient and pre-operative testing
Out-patient and pre-operative testing is offered at the Raisler Testing Center on the third (3rd) floor of the main hospital building. Testing is available Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Pre-operative and specialty testing appointments may be made by calling (212) 434-6057.
Routine outpatient testing is accommodated on a walk-in basis and requires a written physician order for all tests. Fasting is not normally required unless specified by the physician. The department supports a highly skilled phlebotomy staff providing excellent service to our patients.
