Hernia surgery treatments are used to repair a variety of types of hernias including epigastric, umbilical, incisional, lumbar, hiatal and Spigelian hernias.
Laparoscopic ventral hernia repair and laparoscopic hiatal hernia repair both involve the use of a thin, lighted scope called a laparascope being inserted through an incision in the abdomen. Instruments are inserted through other small incisions to repair the hernia, and mesh is placed over the defect to reinforce the abdominal wall. This minimally invasive technique is usually performed under general anesthesia. However, spinal or local anesthesia is an option.
Open surgery for hernia repair is an alternative and is sometimes used for hiatal hernia repair when laparoscopic surgery is not possible.
