CEMS Interfacility Transport Division
Linking the System’s Resources
Providing a vital link among North Shore-LIJ Health System facilities, the Center for Emergency Medical Services (CEMS) transports patients between hospitals so that patients at one hospital can share in the specialties of another. CEMS makes the link for patients whether they need pain management at Syosset Hospital, an oncology consult at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset’s Don Monti Oncology Center, to obstetric and gynecological emergencies or critical cardiac and pediatric cases needing urgent specialty care at one of our tertiary facilities.
A Variety of Needs at All Points of Hospital Stay
Whether a patient needs emergent transportation for a time-sensitive cardiac catheterization, routine transportation for an MRI, or a discharge transport to a rehabilitation or skilled nursing facility after surgery, the Center for Emergency Medical Services keeps the Health System connected. CEMS works directly with patient admitting and the cardiac catheterization lab in order to transport patients from facilities outside our immediate area and allow them to benefit from the extensive resources of the health system. Our efficient and close-knit relationship with discharge planners throughout the health system also helps us reduce a patients’ length-of-stay.
Medical Control – Always Under a Doctor’s Care
As patients leave one facility on their way to the next, they are never out of a doctor’s care. When a patient is being transported in one of our ambulances, whether it’s a 911 emergency call from a residence or a transfer between facilities, our paramedics are always in contact with our state-of-the-art medical control facility. Housed in the emergency department of North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, our medical control facility makes use of board-certified emergency room physicians to guide patient care when needed which enables us to maintain a continuum of care at all times.
