North Shore-LIJ Receives CEO Cancer Gold Standard Accreditation

June 5, 2012

GREAT NECK, NY -- The North Shore-LIJ Health System was recognized as a national leader in focusing on workplace wellness and promoting healthy habits and behavior.  The CEO Roundtable on Cancer accredited North Shore-LIJ with its CEO Cancer Gold Standard, recognizing the health system’s efforts to reduce the risk of cancer for employees and covered family members by promoting healthy lifestyle choices, encouraging early detection through cancer screenings and ensuring access to quality treatment.

“We’re proud of our continuing efforts to reduce the risk of cancer by focusing on the preventive health of our team members,” said Michael J. Dowling, president and chief executive officer of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. “Our programs promoting active and fit lifestyles, preventive care and education all work to serve the same goal – keeping people healthy.”

The CEO Cancer Gold Standard™ calls for organizations to evaluate their health benefits and corporate culture, and take extensive, concrete actions in five key areas of health and wellness: discouraging tobacco use; encouraging physical activity; promoting healthy diet and nutrition; detecting cancer at its earliest stages; and providing access to quality care, including participation in clinical trials.

“Preventing a disease is obviously better than trying to cure it,” said Daniel R. Budman, MD, interim chief of hematology and oncology, North Shore-LIJ’s Don Monti Division of Medical Oncology and Hematology at the Monter Cancer Center in Lake Success. “Recent clinical evidence has reinforced the concepts that lifestyle habits can profoundly influence health. This initiative is a critical demonstration that lifestyles can be changed, which will markedly reduce both the cancer risk and cardiac risk.”

The North Shore-LIJ Health System is among only 26 hospitals and medical centers in the nation that have earned the CEO Roundtable on Cancer’s Gold Standard accreditation, which has also been achieved by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and 13 NCI-designated cancer centers.  CEOs from across industries are keenly aware of the tremendous impact they can have in improving health, controlling health care costs and making a difference beyond their organization’s walls in the fight against cancer and other chronic diseases.

About The CEO Roundtable on Cancer
The CEO Roundtable on Cancer was founded in 2001, when former President George H.W. Bush challenged a group of executives to "do something bold and venturesome about cancer within your own corporate families." The CEOs responded by creating and encouraging the widespread adoption of the CEO Cancer Gold Standard, which calls for organizations to evaluate their health benefits and workplace culture and take extensive, concrete actions in five key areas of health and wellness to fight cancer in the workplace.  For more information on the CEO Cancer Gold Standard™ and the web-based accreditation process and support, please visit www.CancerGoldStandard.org.
