During these sessions, attendees will work with Air Force veteran Bernadette Fackovec, veteran program specialist in North Shore-LIJ’s Workforce Readiness division. She created a guide called “From Barracks to Business: Translating Military Skills to Career Success,” which helps show veterans and service members how their military experiences and skills can be put to use in the civilian workforce.

“Our veterans and military service members have done so much to serve our country and we want to do all we can to give back to them,” Ms. Fackovec said.

North Shore-LIJ will have the following workshops in the next month at 1991 Marcus Ave., Suite 303, Lake Success N.Y.:

• Military/Veteran Spouses Exploration on Friday, Jan. 31, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. This session is for veteran and military spouses to learn about careers at North Shore-LIJ.
• Veteran Career Exploration – Clerical/Administrative on Friday, Feb. 7, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This session is for veterans interested in administrative jobs and has already been filled to capacity.
• North Shore-LIJ Health System Veteran Exploration on Friday, Feb. 21, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. This session is geared toward veterans who want to learn more about the wide variety of careers at North Shore-LIJ.
• North Shore-LIJ Health System Junior Military Officer Exploration Session on Friday, Feb. 28 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. This workshop is for junior military officers who want to learn about jobs in the health system.

North Shore-LIJ, which pays all staff on military leave the difference between their military and health system salaries, has kicked off a number of programs to help veterans ease back into the civilian workforce.

The health system’s Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Health Literacy started a business employee resource group last year for veterans, military service members, their families and those interested in veterans’ affairs called Veterans and Allies: Liaisons of Reintegration to promote an increased sense of community. The health system’s Workforce Readiness division also created the Veteran College Network last year. The network includes about 20 colleges on Long Island and in New York City and helps returning vets find jobs.
