Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology

Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology services of the Department of Pathology at North Shore-LIJ Health System is a recognized center of excellence for the study of tumors and conditions of the oral mucosa, jaws, salivary glands and structures adjacent to the oral and maxillofacial complex. Lymphoproliferative processes and non-neoplastic processes, including immune mediated mucosal diseases, are also a focus of the group.

Our expertise in oral and maxillofacial pathology is a result of the diverse and significant number of cases submitted by the clinicians involved in oral and maxillofacial surgery, the dental specialties, dental medicine, head and neck surgery, radiation medicine, and medical oncology services.

Experience

Interpretations of oral and maxillofacial specimens from the salivary glands, maxillofacial region, oral mucosa, and paranasal sinuses are provided by board certified oral and maxillofacial pathologists. Our pathologists have specialty qualifications and considerable expertise and experience in the varied pathological processes that affect this anatomic region.

In addition, pathology expertise in general anatomic surgical pathology, head and neck pathology, endocrine, bone, pediatric, hematopathology, dermatopathology, neuropathology, molecular, and laboratory medicine combines a depth of comprehensive services necessary to meet the demands of the referring clinicians and the patients they serve. The research faculty of Feinstein Institute is an important component of the directed efforts in translational research related to head and neck cancers and inflammatory processes.

The section of oral and maxillofacial pathology is staffed by Drs. John Fantasia and Robert Kelsch.

  • Dr. John Fantasia is board certified in oral and maxillofacial pathology and specializes in the interpretation of biopsy and surgical specimens from this area. He has a special interest in odontogenic cysts and tumors, bone pathology of the jaws and maxillofacial complex, and systemic diseases that affect the oral cavity.
  • Dr. Robert Kelsch is board certified in oral and maxillofacial pathology and specializes in the interpretation of biopsy and surgical specimens from this area. He has a special interest in pathology of the salivary glands, oral cancer, precancerous conditions and inflammatory mucosal disease.
  • Drs. Fantasia and Kelsch are experienced clinicians and offer clinical services related to patient evaluations in their consultation practice. The correlation of the pathological findings with the clinical presentation offers a unique perspective that facilitates the management of various disease processes.

Special Capabilities and Services

To aid in the diagnosis and classification of neoplastic, and inflammatory pathological processes of the oral and maxillofacial region, we, together with the department of pathology and the subspecialists, can perform a comprehensive array of diagnostic tests which include routine histopathology, cytopathology, histochemistry, frozen section, immunohistochemistry, in-situ hybridization, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, cytogenetics, microbial culture and electron microscopy.

Timely Results

Turnaround time for biopsy interpretation is routinely 24 hours. For cases requiring immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, in-situ hybridization, polymerase chain reaction or cytogenetics, additional time for confirmation of a diagnosis may be required. Slides sent for consultation are returned automatically with an accompanying pathology report, upon completion of the consultative diagnosis.

Standard Specimen Processing

Biopsy kits (formalin bottles, requisition forms, biohazard bags and mailers with prepaid postage are available upon request. Submissions of microscopic slides or tissue blocks for consultation purposes are accepted.
