The North Shore-LIJ Health System Dietetic Internship Program, with a medical nutrition therapy emphasis, prepares individuals to transition from student to professional by integrating didactic knowledge of food and nutrition with practical experience in dietetics. The program provides the highest quality of clinical care, educates current and future generations of dietetic practitioners, searches for new advances in nutrition and food service through outcome-based dietetic research, and promotes health education. This dietetic internship program has a medical nutrition therapy emphasis and will take 40 weeks (about 1,370 hours) to complete. One class of ten interns is admitted annually.
 
Interns will be based at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset and complete rotations at many other health system facilities. The program meets the performance requirements of the Standards of Education and of the American Dietetic Standards of Professional Practice for dietetic professionals. This dietetic internship has initial accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND*) for entry-level dietitians. Graduates of this program will receive a verification statement that will establish eligibility to take the Registration Examination for Dietitians.
 
Our Goals and Outcome Measures
Program Goal One: Prepare graduates for entry-level practice. 
  • Based upon program completion data, 90 percent of enrollees will successfully graduate from the North Shore-LIJ dietetic internship.
  • Based upon data from the most recent one-year period, 90 percent of graduates will successfully complete the Registration Examination for Dietitians on the first attempt.
  • Based on averages from the most recent five-year period, 85 percent of graduates will pass the Registration Examination for Dietitians the first time.
  • Based upon the data obtained from the one-year post graduation survey, at least 80 percent of graduates who are seeking employment will secure entry-level positions in dietetics within six months of program completion.
  • Based upon survey data from employers, 80 percent of employers will rank graduates as competent entry-level practitioners.
 Program Goal Two: Internship prepares entry level practitioner for careers in a variety of healthcare settings: hospitals, health care agencies, government service, food industry, restaurants, school food service and private practice. 
  • Based upon averages from the most recent five-year period, 75 percent of graduates are employed in clinical nutrition settings.
  • Based upon the data obtained from the one-year post graduation survey, 75 percent of graduates indicated that they felt comfortable seeking employment in diverse settings. 
Program Goal Three: Graduate individuals who will demonstrate self-directed career growth. 
  • Based upon averages from the most recent five-year period, greater than 50 percent of graduates intend to enroll or are actively enrolled in graduate programs
  • Based upon averages from the most recent five-year period, greater than 40 percent of graduates will achieve specialty certifications.

Application process

Essential application information includes:

  • Personal statement - Applicants are required to complete a personal statement in 1,000 words or less addressing the following questions:
    • Provide examples of leadership, time management, teamwork and customer service orientation that have helped to prepare you for your career.
    • What are your short-term and long-term goals?
    • What are your strengths and weaknesses or areas needing improvement?
    • Please include other information that you feel would assist the committee in making the decision to admit you to the internship program.
       
  • Recommendations - Three recommendations are required. Recommendations will be submitted electronically and applicants must provide the name and email address contact information for each reference. This will trigger an email message requesting completion of a reference form. Two of the recommendations should be from college instructors in the applicant's major field of study. If you have already graduated and are working, the references can be from your employer and or supervisor(s).
  • Verification statement - An official statement for the Completion of the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD), or Declaration of Intent to complete academic requirements prior to the initiation of the internship program will be processed by the DPD director after the applicant completes the online DICAS application. A verification statement with the original signature of the Official Didactic Program Director with the date in month, day and year format for both the program completion date and the signature date will be required prior to the initiation of the program.

  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended - The applicant needs to download a Transcript Request form when completing the online application. This form is then filled out and sent to the Registrar of each institution attended. The Registrar will send the official transcript and transcript request form directly to DICAS

Applicants must participate in computer matching. They should request this material from any ACEND-accredited/approved didactic program in dietetics program director or from D&D Digital Systems Inc. This request should be made early to allow turnaround time for submitting by the established deadlines for the April computer matches. The code #185 must be listed when selecting the North Shore-LIJ Health System internship. Applicants are screened by an Admissions Committee and are considered without regard to age, sex, race, creed, national origin or physical handicap. Factors considered in the selection criteria are:

  1. Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution prior to the beginning of the internship program. The transcript must state the degree awarded and the conferral date.
  2. Completed Declaration of Intent form signed by the program director of an Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND*) accredited/approved didactic program in dietetics in which you are currently enrolled. If you have already graduated, please submit an original verification of completion form. The verification statement must bear the original signature of the Official Didactic Program Director with the date in month, day and year format for both the program completion date and the signature date.
  3. The North Shore-LIJ Health System Dietetic Internship Program online application deadline is February 1, 2015. The early application deadline allows for qualified applicants to be interviewed prior to the national computer matching in February 15, 2015. Qualified applicants will be notified regarding a personal interview one week after the application deadline.
  4. GPA: A GPA of 3.0 or higher is desirable.

Fees

The program fee is $8,500.  

Application fee is $50.

National computer matching, D&D Digital Systems Inc. fee is $50.
 
DICAS fee is $40 to for one internship program; $20 for each additional program. 
 
Professional liability insurance, lab coat, books and supplies are estimated to be $200 to $400 and are not included in the program fee.
 
The intern is responsible for housing, transportation and any other personal expenses incurred.
Housing: Interns will be responsible for securing housing in the immediate area. Rent for a studio apartment ranges from $600 to $750 per month. Rent for a one-bedroom apartment ranges from $750 to $1,000 per month.

Professional liability insurance: interns are required to obtain professional liability insurance at their own expense (the typical range is $35 to $41) for a minimum of $1 million for each incident and $3 million aggregate. The intern must provide the program director with a valid insurance certificate prior to the start of the internship. The intern must provide evidence of medical/accident insurance to the program director prior to the start of the internship. The cost of insurance will vary and cannot be estimated by the North Shore-LIJ Health System dietetic internship program.

Orientation information

Prior to clinical experiences at our hospitals and facilities it is necessary for you to complete the following orientation program:

Dietetic internship program curriculum

There are several components to the internship program, including:

  • Rotations through clinical, food service and community settings; staff relief experience, lectures and workshops.
  • A minimum of 1,370 hours of supervised practice (at least 37.5 hours per week for 40 weeks are required.) The intern may need to work more hours to complete an assignment. All case study work must be done on the intern's own time.
  • The intern will receive a final rotation schedule at orientation. This schedule must be maintained so that the program can be completed in the designated time frame. The intern will not routinely replace the hours of paid hospital employees except during staff relief as described below.
  • The schedule will include staff relief experience. During this supervised experience, the intern will work under the direction of the registered dietitian. This experience is meant to give the intern an opportunity to experience day-to-day responsibility in a controlled setting.
  • Lectures/workshops will be presented on various topics in clinical, food service management and community dietetics. The interns must attend classes as scheduled. Each intern will be assigned a topic and expected to develop and present germane information to selected audiences.
  • Completion of all rotations, modules, assignments, case studies and presentations is required as evidenced by satisfactory evaluations by preceptors.
  • Evaluation of the intern’s performance with the supervising preceptor recognizing strengths and accomplishments and identifying areas that need further development.
  • Completion of a clinical nutrition examination with a score 85% or higher during Clinical I in order to advance into Clinical II: Cardiac, Medicine, Oncology, Behavioral Mental Health, Neurology, Bariatric Surgery, Gastrointestinal surgery & oncology and Nephrology.
  • Completion of a clinical nutrition examination with a score 85% or higher during Clinical II in order to advance into Clinical III: Critical Care, Pediatrics and Staff Relief.
  • Completion of a final clinical nutrition examination with a score of 85% or higher at the end of Clinical III is required as a requirement for graduation.
  • Participation in a final evaluation process is required in order to receive the verification statement.
  • The curriculum has a medical nutrition therapy emphasis. A total of twenty-four (24) weeks are spent in medical nutrition therapy settings, seven (7) weeks in food service, three (3) weeks in a community setting and two (2) weeks in elective.
  • Medical Nutrition Therapy: Strong emphasis is placed on nutritional assessment and the relationship between the pathophysiology of disease to nutrition principles. Interns work one-to-one with registered dietitians in all aspects of patient care. A variety of experiences will be provided throughout the health system. Rotations will be completed in general medicine, cardiology, surgery, neurology, orthopedics, maternity, oncology, adult and pediatric intensive care, general pediatrics, psychiatry, nephrology, long-term care and outpatient programs. Sites include: Franklin Hospital, glen Cove Hospital, Huntington Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, North Shore University Hospital, Plainview Hospital, Southside Hospital, Staten Island University Hospital and Syosset Hospital.
  • Food Service Management: The food service management rotation offers cook-chill, cook-serve, remote delivery systems, catering and retail operation sites to develop the integration of nutrition knowledge and food service. Experiences include: financial management, completion of a business plan, purchasing, food production, food delivery systems, personnel management, computer applications to food service and nutrition and staff relief. Sites include, Glen Cove Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, North Shore University Hospital and Plainview Hospital. The interns also spend one week in a school food service setting.
  • Community Nutrition: The community nutrition experiences cover the lifespan.Sites include Nassau County and New Hyde Park Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) programs provide postnatal nutrition education and other services. Health System outpatient pediatric and adult clinics.
  • The program allows for eleven holidays. These days are pre-scheduled: Thanksgiving and the Friday after, December 24 through January 1, Martin Luther King Day, Washington's Birthday and Memorial Day.
  • Interns are "on duty" 37.5 hours per week, including class time. Additional time is required to complete assignments, readings and projects. Interns have up to four days of scheduled time off.  Additional time lost to illness, absence or emergency leave must be rescheduled with the program director.

Graduation requirements

Please understand that interns are expected to meet the following requirements in order to obtain the Verification Statement at the end of the program. The Verification Statement is required in order to take the Registration Examination to become a Registered Dietitian. 

  • Complete all rotations, modules, assignments, case studies and presentations as evidenced by satisfactory evaluations by preceptors and program coordinator.
  • Clinical I: complete a clinical nutrition examination with a score 85% or higher in order to advance into Clinical II: Cardiac, Medicine, Oncology, Behavioral Mental Health, Neurology, Bariatric Surgery, Gastrointestinal surgery & oncology and Nephrology.
  • Complete a clinical nutrition examination with a score 85% or higher in order to advance into Clinical III: Critical Care, Pediatrics and Staff Relief.
  • Clinical III: completion of a final examination with a score of 85% or higher is required for graduation.
  • Evaluate your own progress with the help of the Preceptor after each section of the internship (i.e., clinical, food service and community).
  • Participate in a final evaluation process in order to receive your verification statement.
  • Perform ethically in accordance with the values of The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics by following the standards of Professional Practice (2008) and The American Dietetic Association Code of Ethics (2009)
  • Perform self-assessment and participate in professional development.
