Residency in Family Medicine at Glen Cove Hospital

Message from the Program Director

“A well trained, sensible doctor is one of the most valuable assets of a community. To make him efficient is our highest ambition as teachers”  -  Sir William Osler

Sir William Osler, possibly the greatest clinician and teacher in the history of western medicine, so described the importance of training family physicians. Glen Cove Hospital, site of one of the original family medicine residency programs in the United States, has been fulfilling his directive for more than 40 years. Over 230 board-certified family physicians have received their training in our program, and many of them practice successfully on Long island and in the greater metropolitan area.

Our faculty is dedicated to training compassionate, competent and caring family physicians that upon leaving residency are fully able to practice effectively in today’s challenging medical environment. All faculty members are board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine or other appropriate specialty boards and continue to practice medicine in the community, so they maintain the realistic, practical approach to patient care required by our specialty. One full-time faculty member for every four residents assures a personal, hands-on approach to teaching and supervision, so the abilities of our residents can be nurtured and expanded in the supportive environment of a community-based, university-affiliated, unopposed and well-established program.

Our program has many strengths, among them the friendly atmosphere of a thoroughly modern community hospital combined with easy access to all the facilities and resources of the renowned North Shore-LIJ Health System and the ground breaking educational programs of the Hofstra/North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. In 2014 Glen Cove united its clinical endeavors with those of nearby Huntington Hospital resulting in an exceptional balance of inpatient and ambulatory experiences and a clinical faculty envied by many other programs. The Hospital Administration at both sites is dedicated to the principles of family medicine being both sensitive to our needs and cognizant of our important contribution to the health and well-being of our surrounding communities.

Congratulations on your choice of the specialty of family medicine for your career as a physician. It will be a challenging and rewarding experience.

Come visit the program where academic and clinical excellence, interpersonal and professional skills, and resident and faculty enthusiasm combine to produce “well trained and sensible doctors.”
