Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at North Shore-LIJ Health System

About us

Our fellows are exposed to a wide range of coronary interventions including elective coronary angioplasty and stent, primary acute MI intervention and niche procedures such as rotablator, Angio Jet, Filterwire and Guardwire. Both femoral and radial approaches are routinely used. For interested fellows, there is the option of learning peripheral vascular interventional techniques and adult congenital procedures such as ASD and PFO closure. The learning experience is primarily through one-on-one participation in an individual procedure with an interventional attending. There is a daily 7:00 a.m. Interventional Conference during which interesting and instructive cases from the previous day are reviewed by fellows and attendings. North Shore University Hospital is the primary site of the fellowship and fellows will spend eight months of the year there and four months at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. In addition to interventional fellows and attendings, extremely capable nurses, technicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants staff the cath lab. There are also general cardiology fellows rotating through the cath lab. Given the senior status of the interventional fellows, they are expected to have a leadership role in the teaching of the more junior fellows.

Curriculum

Typically, there will be weekly didactic sessions with topics that fulfill the requirements of the American Board of Internal Medicine. A daily schedule for morning conference will be distributed on a quarterly basis. The curriculum is revised annually based on technical changes in the field and feedback from the fellows. Didactic topics will include not only individual devices but also pharmacotherapy, pathophysiology and evidence based approaches to the treatment of coronary disease.

Conferences

Daily Morning Teaching Conference takes place from 7:00-7:30 AM. Topics include: interesting cases presented by residents and discussed with faculty members, didactic lectures are given by the faculty attendings from the NSUH andLIJ campuses as well as guest faculty from other disciplines, journal club, research topics presented by residents and device management. There is a monthly combined cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery conference, a morbidity and mortality conference and cardiology grand rounds.

Training locations

Our fellows rotate monthly at the campuses at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, New Hyde Park, NY or at North Shore University Hospital, Manhasset, NY.

Curriculum

The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship program enrolls two trainees for a period of twelve continuous months. All applicants entering interventional cardiology must have completed a cardiovascular disease program accredited by the ACGME. In all clinical experiences, fellows must:

  • Participate in pre-procedural planning, including the indications for the procedure and the selection of the appropriate procedure or instruments
  • Perform the critical technical manipulations of the procedure
  • Demonstrate substantial involvement in post-procedure care
  • Be supervised by teaching faculty responsible for the procedure

Our faculty

Message from the program directors

Our Interventional Cardiology Fellowship takes advantage of two high volume and innovative interventional cardiology programs at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset and Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center in New Hyde Park, New York.

The Catheterization Laboratory at North Shore University Hospital is comprised of nine state of the art digital, flat panel equipped rooms. The catheterization laboratories at LIJ Medical Center are comprised of four state of the art digital laboratories. Procedure types include coronary interventions, valvular and congenital cardiac interventions and peripheral vascular interventional procedures. The combined volume of percutaneous interventional procedures of these two programs is greater than 6,000 interventions per year, easily the largest volume in New York State.

Both programs have received recognition from New York State for statistically superior outcomes. With ten full time faculty members, the fellows selected for the three interventional cardiology positions receive intense individual attention and teaching. This, combined with the high volume of procedures, results in an exceptionally high quality learning experience.

We invite you to learn more about our program.
