Residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Lenox Hill Hospital
The residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology consists of a four-year period of structured learning and progressive experience. A total of twelve positions are offered, three at each level. All first year applicants are processed through the National Resident Matching Program.
The resident gains experience by providing supervised care to all patients, both ambulatory and hospitalized. A full complement of outpatient clinics is available, including regular and high-risk obstetrics, gynecologic oncology, endocrinology/infertility, colposcopy, and urogynecology. Experience is available in all aspects of breast disease, including diagnostic testing, fine-needle aspiration and surgical management.
Residents at each level spend time in the various subspecialty clinics and thus receive a well-rounded education. During the first three years, residents attend a continuity clinic where they develop a cohort of patients whom they manage throughout the program. This continuity of care is pivotal in assisting the resident to master the principles of primary care OB/GYN.
The first year of residency provides eight months of concentrated experience in obstetrics, including two eight-week blocks of night float, and a four-month rotation in gynecology. Throughout the year, the first year resident attends a half-day weekly ob/gyn continuity clinic focusing on general primary OB/GYN and preventive health.
The second year includes a concentrated four-month experience in obstetrics, with primary responsibility for the management of antepartum and high-risk patients. Seven months are spent in gynecology, including inpatient surgical gynecology, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, and ambulatory care (emergency room and gyn-continuity clinic). Night call responsibility in this year is primarily in gynecology.
The third year consists of advanced training in gynecology, gynecologic surgery and obstetrics. The third-year residents oversee the Labor and Delivery Unit and gain senior management responsibility in the treatment of intrapartum complications during four months of day float and four months of night float (each rotation in two month blocks). The third-year night call resident has responsibility for overseeing the ER, operating room and the labor & delivery room. A one-month elective rotation, usually done at an outside institution of the resident’s choice, allows each resident to pursue an area of particular interest.
During the fourth year the resident serves as the chief of each major departmental service in four-month blocks. The fourth-year resident also acts as a chief of all the subspecialty clinics including high-risk, gynecologic oncology, and urogynecology. In addition, each chief resident is designated to be responsible for administrative matters, on-call schedules, and overall supervision of the house staff in four-month blocks.
Each subspecialty — gynecologic oncology, reproductive endocrinology, and maternal-fetal medicine — is headed by a board-certified subspecialist. In addition, urogynecology is taught by a board-certified urologist. The Department encourages residents to continue in fellowship education if they so desire and will aid in obtaining fellowship positions. Physician assistants have been appointed to assist with routine patient care and procedures to allow the residents greater time for study and research.
A state-of-the-art antepartum testing center provides extensive clinical experience and hands-on teaching in the performance of ultrasound assessment of fetal anatomy, prenatal genetic testing, fetal well-being, and amniocentesis. Residents also receive supervised experience with gynecologic ultrasound examinations such as the evaluation of adnexal masses, ectopic pregnancy, vaginal bleeding, gynecologic malignancy, and pelvic infection.
The third and fourth-year residents are assigned a yearly clinical research project, the results of which are presented at a Resident Research Day Conference. Nationally recognized guest professors are invited to judge and discuss the presentations for which prizes are awarded. The Department also conducts a full schedule of teaching conferences, resident rounds with the director and faculty, journal club, and subspecialty teaching conferences on a daily basis. The weekly grand rounds consist of a guest lecture by a renowned professor who then meets with the residents for an additional teaching session.
The Department’s long-standing tradition of teaching reflects our profound commitment to resident education. The Program stresses acquisition of medical knowledge and the clinical and surgical skills required for excellent patient care.
The program is founded upon competency based education including medical knowledge, patient care, practice-based learning and improvement, systems-based practice, interpersonal and communication skills and professionalism.
Residents are continuously encouraged to apply the principles of evidence-based medicine and to evaluate the effectiveness of their own practice. An appreciation for the broader healthcare context of OB/GYN’s work is a fundamental pillar of resident training. Successful completion of the program will qualify the candidate for eligibility for the certifying examinations of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
